Frank Sinatra sings a song about having been a pirate and a pauper. I don't think he has much on me. I’ve worked many odd jobs, from digging ditches, detailing cars, chopping firewood and waiting tables, to bee keeping. I’ve done some significant hitch-hiking, spent time in pool halls and honkey-tonks, and I’ve known many who are similar in character to Jimmy Portside, the hero of my novel.
Besides that, I am still a young guy. I was born March 4, 1981 in Camarillo, California, and was raised my entire life in Southern California. I received a BFA in theater and a minor in creative writing out of UC Santa Barbara.
Films and books have always fascinated me, especially the ones with great stories character-driven by powerful anti-heroes. I write about what I know, and wrote The Devil’s Whipping His Wife because I set out to tell a moving story of literary quality that will move a wide range of folks. Every character in the novel is based on someone I’ve known at one time or another.
The Devil’s Whipping His Wife is my first novel. I did write for my college newspaper, where I had my own column. Currently, I’m working on a collection of short stories by incorporating descriptive narrative and dialogue for portraits taken by international photographer, Jim Englund. Our collaboration is of the old West, and our Art Show will be on display come Spring at The Woolworth Building in Oxnard, California.
